Sharing the Air

Sharing the Air

This photo really fell together nicely in a short amount of time on a cold day.

Local television personalities Chris Schukei (left) and Colleen Williams share the airwaves, and a marriage, but work for different stations. The couple is standing in the dish farm behind the Hastings KHAS-TV station, where Schukei works. Williams commutes to Kearney from their home in Hastings to work at NTV, the ABC affiliate in Kearney.

Long Time Coming

Long Time Coming

I’ll remember where I was when Barack Obama become our 44th president.

As the television at left shows people in Chicago celebrating just after President Barack Obama finishes taking the oath of office Tuesday morning, officially becoming the first African-American president in the nation’s history, Grand Island resident Ruby Washington (right) celebrates with her son-in-law, Paul Harris. “I never thought we would see an African-American president during my life,” Washington said.

Smart Blue

Smart Blue

I just like the way the numbers run across the teacher in this pic, and the way her face is illuminated by the reflection of the white band on the screen. The photo ran in BW in the paper, but is fully blue here.

Trinity Lutheran School eighth-graders learn more about proper grammar as English teacher Jerrita Staehr plays Jeopardy with her class with the help of a SMART Board. Broken up into teams, members of Staehr’s class select a category and try to answer the revealed grammatical problem. The SMART Board was purchased for the school with proceeds from the Elaine May Estate.

Cold & Wind Blown

Cold & Wind Blown

This is the result of an assignment to get a photo of the cold windy conditions of the day. How do you take a photo of something that’s not visible? In this case, find something that the wind is affecting and hope someone walks by in cold weather clothing. No one did during the half hour I waited before looking and finding another photo elsewhere. I almost didn’t go back. But, as I did, I saw this guy walking toward the scene and got to my spot just in time. Thankfully, the wind was actually blowing at that moment too.

As the wind blows balloons attached to a light post parallel to the ground, a pedestrian walks along Fourth Street in Grand Island. Windy conditions made for below zero wind-chill conditions as temperatures stayed in the single digits through the morning.
