All-star Captain

Sometimes when taking a sports portrait of an all-star player it’s nice to have a plan. With this portrait of Ravenna’s Greg Nissen, I actually had a vision of what I wanted to the photo to look like instead of riffing an idea on the spot. I used two Canon 550 EX flashes with gobos to light the background, and a 10″ grid spot on my main light to light Greg’s face while leaving his lower body and basketballs in silhouette.

While photographing a hot rod shop, one of the employees told me he had something to show me out back. To my delight, there were lots of old-rusting cars and trucks scattered among parts and pieces. Not sure why taking photos of old rusty things is fun, but it is. This is my favorite photo from this adventure.

While covering an auction, I saw that there were some spots on the bleacher seating area that I suppose had these type of seat backs on them for regular customers. Not sure what the purpose of the stuffed animal on the one chair is. I remember thinking, “Surely, no one will sit in that chair,” but, of course, someone did.
