Highlights from the Redesign Q&A

You can replay the live chat we held to help answer questions about our new website redesign, but if you don’t want to sift through that, I’m going to post some of the Big Questions people had.

Archives: Our full archives will be down for a while as the company tackles getting 10 years of stories and content transferred and rebuilt. In the meantime, we have a temporary archive set up that goes back to June 21, 2007. It can be found on the front page of the website by looking at the navigation across the top and finding the link in the sub-navigation underneath called ‘News Archive,’ or you can click here. I do not have an ETA on when our full archives will be back online, but they will be.

Text Size: Some folks have commented that the font size in the stories is too small and hard to read. I hate to break it to you guys, but we didn’t change the font size at all. It’s the same as before. It occurred to me though, that occasionally – and seemingly out of the blue – my browser will arbitrarily shrink that page’s font size. If this happened to you, try clicking on ‘View’ in your browser, and from there you can enlarge the font size.

AP Sections: Currently we only have State and National feeds from the AP up and running, but we are working at bringing back the rest of the sections.

Spotted Galleries: We’ve had a couple of calls from folks looking for our Spotted Galleries. They are still up and running at http://spotted.theindependent.com, or by clicking the link under the ‘Photos’ tab across the top of the page.

Twitter: Our Twitter feed is now functioning again. Follow us at http://twitter.com/theindependent

Get the Picture: Another feature that we run in Classifieds was missing in the new design. Readers can now get to the “Get the Picture” entry form by clicking the ‘Photos” tab on our main page. The form link is under that.

Weather Radar: One reader wanted to know if we would have a closer local radar on the weather page and the answer to that is yes. That is coming within the next month.

That’s pretty much what we covered in the chat and through phone calls and emails. If you have a question we haven’t covered yet, please email me and I’ll help you out.

    Text size adjustments – Extended

In your browser menu clicking VIEW – TEXT SIZE – gives the options. A much quicker way of adjusting this is via the keyboard with CTRL and + (plus). The website does a fantastic job of not breaking layout when you do this and mantains usability and readability. If by some chance you go to large CTRL and – (minus). To quickly get back to normal CTRL and 0 (zero) will do the trick.

RSS feeds of headlines! I love it! I’ve been pining for headline syndication for a couple years.
